5G IS COMING, BUT WHAT WILL IT BE USED FOR?

Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and others are already testing high-band services that will likely form the basis of 5G. Some operators hope to launch commercial 5G service as early as next year. In the meantime, vendors are preparing for a new wave of demand for equipment that will support the 1 Gbps speeds and billions of devices that 5G promises to connect and enable.

But what exactly will all those 5G devices be doing? The answers span the gamut: Replacing wired fiber internet connections; providing super-low latency for autonomous driving; powering high-bandwidth applications like virtual reality and augmented reality; controlling high-powered machinery and robots; remotely enabling surgery and other tele-health services; connecting millions of devices including fleets of drones; and more.
Of course, some of these George Jetson scenarios may not pan out in a real world constrained by shrinking margins, myriad regulations and competitive alternatives.
So how should wireless players position themselves for a 5G future? Where are the near-term market opportunities, and which industry verticals will line up first to pay for 5G connections? How should operators, vendors, and others tune their networks and services? What technologies will they deploy to take advantage of these 5G use cases?
FierceWireless will pose these questions and more to a roundtable of top wireless executives to get the inside track on the next-generation wireless market and the 5G opportunity.
