EasyPass: Reducing IoT Network Lag by 90% Without New Hardware

2020

In the article “Researchers propose solutions for networking lag in massive IoT devices”, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering introduce “EasyPass,” an innovative method to alleviate network congestion in massive IoT deployments. EasyPass exploits the existing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) margin in wireless channels to create a dedicated side channel exclusively for IoT devices. This approach doesn’t require additional hardware or spectrum resources. Lab tests demonstrated a 90% reduction in data transmission delays and achieved throughput up to 2.5 Mbps over a narrowband wireless link accessible by more than 100 IoT devices simultaneously. This solution holds promise for enhancing real-time performance in environments like smart factories, healthcare systems, and automated warehouses.
